There are many piazzas or squares in the eternal city to explore while you are there. However, Piazza Colonna is one of the few which must be visited to experience the rich history of Roman culture. It is one of the most visited spots in the city and rightly so. As we know, Rome has numerous historical monuments to offer such as the Roman Colosseum, the Pantheon, Vatican City and many more. This list is incomplete without adding this magnificent square.
The best thing to discover here is the old yet amazing Column of Marcus Aurelius. This column has been here for almost 2000 years and was constructed to honor the great emperor of Roman era, Marcus Aurelius. The architectural beauty and essence of the ancient Rome mustn’t be missed at any cost. In addition to that, this column is brilliantly detailed and offers a spectacular view. One can also find the statue of Saint Paul on top of this Coolum. This statue was erected in the 16th century and has been there ever since.
There is also a superb fountain here making matters even better. It is famously known as Fontana di Piazza Colonna and is here since right around the time of statue of Saint Paul. This destination is hard to miss as it is situated right in the heart of Rome. Moreover, Trevi fountain and the Pantheon are just a walking distance from here. The north side of the piazza has Palazzo Chigi, the official residence of the prime minister of Italy. For that reason, it is also called as a political centre of the Italian capital. The popular shopping area of Rome, via del Corso, is quite near from this place too. San Bartolomeo dei Bergamaschi church is another spot to discover. All in all, a trip to Piazza Colonna would totally be worthwhile!
