Eating in Rome for a tourist is a very difficult undertaking, not because there are no good restaurants, but because there are so many that does not know where to go to eat in Rome.
That’s why I decided to write this article, designed just for those who want to visit Rome and logically as a tourist does not want to peck the typical one! (it has happened to me as an italian Tourist so many times in Italia) and we ask ourself “Where can I eat well in Rome?”.
We have made a collection of restaurants in Rome in the city center because we imagine that if you’re a tourist, you will visit the city center, sleep over there and right in the center will seek a place to eat. We have drafted up a list of restaurants, relying on a combination of advices from (Romans) friends and some restaurants with a high score on tripadvisor, but watch out! as always happens in any restaurant in Rome and all over the world, 10 people eat fabulous and the eleventh eat badly, so we don’t have the responsibility! In addition as this article is written now, we do not know if any of that restaurants have been changed the management or chef in the meantime.
However, if you go without safe advice (speaking statistically) you’ll end up eating in a restaurant that plucks!
Zone where to eat
Usually you will find restaurants in this centric areas: Campo Marzio (The triangle: Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps, Castel S. Angelo), Trastevere (here is full of restaurants, perhaps the best area to eat).

My favourite restaurant where eat in Rome
The recommended restaurants to eat in Rome, based on the advice of friends and close relatives (ie they have eaten and tried it directly):
- Cantina e Cucina Via del Governo Vecchio
A characteristic place in the decor, very good dishes, especially the Roman dishes (but also the pizzas). Prices are moderate. Plentiful and tasty food, magical atmosphere and very kind waiters.
- Osteria Rugantino
Typical Osteria in Trastevere. Menu at affordable prices (€ 13.00 – € 15.00 2016 prices), we eat well but the portions (according to many comments on tripadvisor) are restricted. Very good the first, the waiters are masked, the place a bit ‘tourist but a good quality price if you have a tight budget.
- L’antica Birreria Peroni
- Hostaria 31
- Mario’s Via del Moro
A classic osteria with typical dishes of the popular Roman cuisine that almost goes unnoticed in the alleys of Trastevere. All very tasty and generous portions. Each dish is full of unique aromas and flavors, presented with quality. Good and local reception with good seating availability. I recommend going there for dinner and take 2 steps in the fascinating Trastevere.
- Osteria del Sostegno
Small and excellent restaurant in the center of Rome. We serve typical Roman and other dishes. Atmosphere and great food the key words of this restaurant unique location a stone’s throw from the pantheon! Very good typical Roman dishes, first made with fresh pasta. Prices in the average, right price quality.
- Quarto a Via Crescenzio (carne)
- Porto a Via Crescenzio (pesce)
Porto is a seafood restaurant in Via Crescenzo. It is part of the chain of three brothers (Cuarto, Porto, Orto the first meat, the second fish the third vegetarian). The restaurant on the “modern but not cold” style is located in a very central position. The dishes are interesting but the prices are certainly not cheap. To try if you are looking for a “fishy” alternative.
- Orto a Via Crescenzio (vegetariano)
Orto is a peculiar vegetarian restaurant, a beautiful location where the high ceilings and “rough” walls are combined with typical objects of the fields’ invasion … all revisited in modern style! Interesting dishes come out of normal. Perfect for a change, even if the prices are not very low.
- Queen Makeda ad Aventino
A delicious Pub with international cuisine. Perfect if you want to try fiatti out of the ordinary. It has a wide variety of beers. Prices are average and however fair for what you eat. Great vegetarian burger. We recommend booking in the internal garden, really delicious.
- Da Dante a Prati
Historic Roman tavern frequented at times by celebrities. Honestly, the restaurant is not aesthetically anything that is missing a touch of color and decorations. You eat normal, affordable prices, fast and kind service. In short, if you go from those parts and do not know where to eat could be a solution.
- L’osteria dell’Ingegno (Piazza della Pietra)
Refined atmosphere and rich soul, excellent cuisine, attentive service and very kind, a real treat this restaurant on the beautiful Piazza di Pietra. A tasty menu with high quality ingredients. You eat well but it is quite expensive.
- Trattoria Vecchia Roma
Typical Roman trattoria a little caciarona and with friendly and sociable staff. If you are in Rome and do not want to go to extra-luxury places the trattoria Vecchia Roma and the best you can find, hospitality and friendliness of the staff, typical Roman dishes and reasonable prices.
- Da Francesco (Piazza del Fico)
The restaurant in the historic center, in the picturesque setting of the beautiful Piazza del Fico stands out for good food, traditional cuisine. Porcini mushrooms, truffles of the season always delicious. Simple but good cuisine. The restaurant has basic furnishings. It is very popular, better to book.
- La Montecarlo
Simple Roman trattoria, where you can eat giant portions of homemade pasta in aluminum dishes and very large Roman pizzas. The dishes give a lot of satisfaction. Tables laid with paper tablecloths, screaming waiters, many seated tourists make it very folklore. Pretty cheap prices, maybe a little hasty in getting you to eat.
